Airflow July 2007 - Flight Reviews

Audit of Annual GFA Flight Reviews

This article is addressed to all experienced glider pilots; that is everyone except those who are:

  • training towards their 1st solo flight;
  • recent solo pilots subject to daily, monthly or quarterly check flights.

Continued participation in our sport entails responsibilities that we accept for our benefit and those of our Club. The President has asked the Instructors Panel to increase its due diligence aimed at ensuring these responsibilities are met – to protect you as a pilot, and the Club in terms of its Duty of Care.

A review of Tug Pilot credentials has recently been completed by the Tug Master. We will now expand this process to include an audit of glider pilot Annual GFA Flight Reviews which, as you know, is a mandatory requirement for continued activity as a solo glider pilot.

The audit will be conducted during Spring, by which time many of you will have completed your 2007 Flight Review. GCV keeps records of Flight Reviews we conduct, and these will be the initial reference for the audit. If a record of your Review cannot be located, we will contact you for advice.

You will recall that an Annual Flight Review is a GFA requirement, not a GCV requirement. If you are a member of another Club and complete your Review with them, that is all that is required. In this situation, please ensure you have a dated logbook entry confirming completion of your Review that we can sight during our audit.

I'm sure this audit will be invisible to most of you, and that your last Annual GFA Flight Review was less than 12 months ago. If not, please get your your flying credentials in order before we approach you on the matter.

If you think the Club is being pedantic on this matter, please remember that insurance companies will request the date of your last Flight Review as part of assessing any claim – this applies to both the GFA Broad-Based Liability Cover and any cover you might have on your own glider. Without a valid Flight Review, you expose the Club and yourself to significant loss in the event of damage to a glider.

If you are unclear about requirements for Annual GFA Flight Reviews, or wish to discuss the GCV audit of those Reviews, please call me on 0429 147 462.
