Airflow February 2009 - Competition Lifts Skills in Cross-Country Flying

Competition Lifts Skills in Cross-Country Flying

by Juri Jeske

As part of the 47th Multi-Class National Competition, a number of very lucky pilots were provided the opportunity to fly in the Duo Discus with David Conway, a National Coach from Adelaide.

Amongst the many aspects of flying and competition, strategy, thermalling, dolphin flying, tactics, navigation, dealing with fatigue and meteorology were significant areas of practice over the four to six-hour-long tasks.

Spectacular competition finishes, an out-landing, repeated air-sickness experiences (Dave complained that I brought along only transparent plastic bags!), days with blue skies and dust devils as well as days of cloud 'highways' gave us a taste of different conditions and the thrill that is shared during these events.

On behalf of my flying colleagues: Jutta, Kah, Amy, Brian and John; I wish to sincerely thank the club and David for their very generous contribution to our flying careers.
