Airflow September 2009 - Eighty years in gliding

Eighty years in gliding

by John Switala

This year, 2009, the Gliding Club of Victoria is celebrating 80 years in gliding. In order to commemorate this occasion we are organising a grand event to celebrate. The event will be held in the Club's tug hangar on Benalla Airfield on Saturday December 12 starting at 8 p.m.

The theme will be 1930s and 1940s, so come dressed in the fashion of the day or perhaps find one of granddad’s or grandma’s old uniforms; maybe grandma was a hostie in them days.  Fancy dress is not essential but will add to flavour of the celebration. A twelve piece band will be playing music from the 1930s through to current tastes so make sure you bring your dancing shoes! Cost is $35 per head. Food will be available for an additional cost and a bar will be available to quench your thirst after all that dancing.

An auction will be held of an out-of-spec (not one with bent tips) authentic Pawnee propeller. Although it can't be used on our Pawnees any more it it a good specimen for mounting in your home or office. A unique opportunity for an aviation enthusiast.

The local aviation museum will also be open during the day with many flying and non-flying displays to amuse.

Bookings are essential as we are limited to numbers, so call Rhonda at the GCV office on 03 5762 1058 or email gliding@benalla.net.au

Place this day in your diaries and help us make it an event to remember.
