Strong W wind (29 kt reported below cloudbase, much stronger higher up), 27 deg C with good cumulus affected by wave. Played with broken wave on first leg, without success. Met up with Bob Nicholls in his 18m Ventus 2 at Dartmouth Dam. We both had difficulty in getting a decent climb, due to wave breaking up the thermals, so decided not to go further east. Ran into wave in Mitta Mitta valley on return leg, which went to 10,000 ft, a second one in the Kiewa Valley which reached 13,000 ft and, finally, a stronger one just E of Mt. Buffalo that peaked at 5 kts and was still giving 3 kts at 13000 ft. I didn't go higher, because the oxygen mask was safely back in the hangar. ATC gave clearance to climb in this wave and to go towards Benalla, but asked me to park in the wave for about ten minutes to clear other traffic. 82 kph |

Today there was a southerly blowing at the start of the day, which changed to a Southwesterly during the day. The thermals started about 09:30 and RASP predicted that they would be brocken and go to 7000 foot later in the day. In the event they went to 5000 foot. David Jansen flying his ASG 29 thought he might try a little flight so he launched at 09:27 and landed in Queensland for a straight out 1105kms. Have a look on the OLC for the trace |

A frustrating day, blue everywhere except for weak, scrappy cumulus towards Buller (a convergence line}and elsewhere generally south of Mt. Buffalo. Much better in the blue, where the Junior Nationals had a reasonable day. Slow, but never low. |
