Day Name Distance Title Description
15th of August 2010 JOHN L GWYTHER 150km More wave to FL180

Another great wave day down at Lake Glenmaggie in Gippsland. NW winds at 25-30 knots with lots of cloud build-upon the N side of the Divide. Entry at 2,800' downwind from Mt Ben Cruachan with moderate rotor turbulence (Lift +15 knots/-12 knots) before that "snap" transition to wave at an initial 10-12 knots.

Moved 25 km cross-wind at 7,000' to Mt Wellington without any height loss then climbed at 4-7 knots to FL180. Spreading cirrostratus, -22 deg C and hoar frost covering the inside of the canopy meant an easy decision to head home. Flight time 2:07.

Later that day, the clouds dried out and some classic lennies stretched as far as you could see to the NE. Too bad I was stuck in a meeting.

19th of June 2010 JOHN L GWYTHER 165km nice wave flight

nice wave flight out of Glenmaggie in Westerly wind. Several climbs off different ranges, top height 14,000' and best climb 7-8 knots but typically 2-4 knots. Duration 2:30.

5th of June 2010 KAH-YEOW CHONG Shepparton Air Cadets

The club hosted air cadets from the Shepparton squadron on Saturday. Fun was had by all with GFZ, GCV, WVV online to fly 13 excited air cadets.

8th of May 2010 LEWIS ARTHUR TANKARD Not always about Cross country

Good flights are not always about cross country. Had an excellant day on Saturday with a good student practicing launch failures, tow breaks etc. 8 Flights, each averaging about 3-4 mins! Then ended the day with a higher launch, some free flying and a loop or three. Wonderful day, a lot learned and instructor and student with big grins at the end of the day. Very satisfying.

19th of April 2010 CHARLES DAY 13985km Season's total

These are genuine kilometers, unsullied by any form of electronic logging.

No notably long or fast flights in my antique Glasflugel Kestrel, but plenty of slow ones. 85.5 kph overall for the season, about 5 kph down on last season. No outlandings.

Other individuals did much longer flights and up to 22,000 km over the season, as I recall. Much of this was recorded on the On-Line Contest.

My impression was that the season was sub-standard, mainly due to several unusually severe incursions of moist tropical air from the north; however it turned out that Benalla was perhaps the gliding site least affected.

We were prevented from going more than 200 - 300 km north of Benalla due to weakening conditions on a number of days. The Snowy Mtns. 200 km E of Benalla were out of bounds virtually all season due to persistent moist air coming in from the east coast. West and southerly tracks from Benalla were unaffected.

18th of April 2010 CHARLES DAY 320km Cautious run N to Lake Cullival.

Lt N wind, 26 deg C with cumulus to 6500 ft and moderate areas of spread-out of middle level cloud associated with a weak trough approaching from the west.

Nail-biting final glide from 80 km out at 48:1 with a 400 ft margin nourished by an unexpected additional 500 ft in one knot about half way home.

17th of April 2010 CHARLES DAY 400km Glorious autumn cloud streets at 7500 ft

Patchy conditions with cumulus at 6000 ft.

3rd of April 2010 LEWIS ARTHUR TANKARD 180km Lovely end to X country season

Dont often get to fly x country. Had a most enjoyable flight in the LS7 north of Cobram then to Yarrawonga and home. Never really got below 4000' most of the time. Between Yarrawonga and Benalla only needed one climb, the flew fast into Benalla. Very satisfying.

9th of January 2010 KIRK AMOS 265km Junior Flight

Well it was another Saturday ballot battle to get a single seat, and I got Junior which was better than some others that went empty handed. Morning breifing said an early shut off but I thought I might head for Corowa and perhaps Henty. Well I struggled a bit getting away, but soon I was heading towards some Cu's near Corowa with a bit of a tailwind to help me along and hopefully some easier flying out of the blue. Once under the Cu's I found the lift pretty weak, and wasted some time trying to fly cloud to cloud rather than with purpose. So at 2.30 I had been up for about 2 1/2 hours and with the prospect of an early shut off and a head wind in the Junior I decided that even though it was only 20 ks to Henty I had better turn around and head for home. Well as they say, hind sight is 20 - 20 and by the time I reached Corowa I knew that I should have pushed on and made Henty. Got back , no early shut off and although I was happy to have made over 250 in the Junior it would have been far sweeter to have made Henty and maybe a 300. All in all another good flight and glad to have made a good cross country flight in XOB.

8th of January 2010 CHARLES DAY 580km Temora - Narrandera - Benalla

37 deg, lt. N wind. A straightforward day with cu' to 10,500, but a 50 km band of thick cirrus on the last leg to provide interest.

100 kph

7th of January 2010 CHARLES DAY 250km Bogong High Plains convergence

Calm, blue and stable day, with tantalizing isolated cu's over the hills that retreated eastwards.

Met up with Bob Nicholls E of Mt. Buffalo, chasing scraps of cu towards Mt. Bogong. We then found a weak convergence marked by cloud from about Cleve Cole Hut on Mt. Bogong all the way across the High Plains to Mt Hotham, gradually climbing 2000 ft above cloudbase to 10,000, where we headed for home. Not a ripple until about half way back at Mt. Emu.

30th of December 2009 CHARLES DAY 630km West to the Grampians for a change

Lt NNE wind, 36 deg, with Cu's W of Bendigo, as predicted by Dr. Jack. Slow going to Bendigo in the blue. Turned at Mt. William, where cloudbase was 10,000 ft. Last cu on return leg at Mt. Alexander, NE of Castlemaine, many Senior's Moments thereafter. but arrived back with plenty of height at 7.55 pm. Only 88 kph.

A scenic route.

29th of December 2009 CHARLES DAY 720km O an R to Merriwagga silo (just S of Hillston)

35 deg. C with Cu's to 9000 ft, lowering at turn point due to wet ground and trough. Followed a good dry track via Jerilderie and just W of the Colleambally rice area and the Griffith irrigation.

A good run: 108 kph.

Lt. wind, 31 deg. C, blue to W, trough N of the Rock.

A slow Boxing Day amble, keeping within the cumulus area and away from the trough. 95 kph

22nd of December 2009 KIRK AMOS 327km First 300. Yippee !

YBLA - Yarrawonga - Henty & return. Great first 300k flight, in the blue until about 40 k's from Henty then some nice Cu's to speed me along to Henty and then part of the way back, before once again back into the blue. Good heights under the Cu's to over 10,000ft. Was a great day for it. Finally have the silver C (and gold now as well), after 2 previous flights to Y/wonga and return but no correct log for GFA. Thanks to John Duffield for letting me use the LS-7 and Max for the route selection etc.

9th of December 2009 CHARLES DAY 300km Crawling to Bendigo

A stable blue day with light NW wind, 24 deg. C. A large band of cirrus from the NW blanked out Benalla in mid- afternoon, but left the run west to Bendigo unaffected.

Slow progress due to broken thermals, initially to 4000, increasing to 6000 ft. One low spot of 2500 ft..

71 kph overall

7th of December 2009 CHARLES DAY 240km Mt. Hotham wave

Moderate W wind lower down, increasing to 40 kt at 10,000 ft. Mid level cloud approaching from W ahead of a trough. Isolated cumulus mainly E of Mt. Buffalo. 31 deg. C max. Some Nervous Nellies didn't launch.

I started off E, chasing cumulus that retreated east to beyond the Dartmouth Dam. Conditions were so slow that I tried to get into wave near Mt. Bogong and come home. This failed, as did another attempt just N of Mt. Feathertop, but a working cu. was finally found just N of Mt Hotham which got me to 9400 ft where I could transit into the wave. This was up to 5 kts. Having forgotten the oxygen mask (yet again), I broke off at 14000 ft still in 2 - 3 kts. This allowed a comfortable 100 km final glide to Benalla at 70 kts, despite the ferocious headwind. Two weaker waves were passed en-route.

6th of December 2009 CHARLES DAY 280km Struggling to Urana

Blue, weak and stable with light N wind and some patches of high cirrus.

Pair flying with Louise O'Grady. A slow trip N with several low spots, improving to 5000' max at Urana. Return trip again a struggle near Murray R. A difficult day with several outlandings.

5th of December 2009 CHARLES DAY 500km Pyrenees out and return

Moderate SW wind, with cumulus at 4500 starting W of Benalla, increasing to 6500 with some streeting. Generally overcast south of track.

A comfortable run, keeping high and cruising slowly. Several stretches of over-development.

100kph overall.

25th of November 2009 CHARLES DAY 440km The Rock - Jerilderie - Benalla

Light N wind, 32 deg. C max, humid with thunderstorms forecast to the N of Benalla.

A late start at 1.45 pm, about the earliest one could confidently head off. Slow and blue at first, but some feeble soggy cu's at about 5000 to the N. Conditions gradually improved heading N, becoming very good from The Rock to about Lake Urana, with cloudbase reaching 8500. This area had escaped the general 50 mm of rain over the past week. Some deterioration and lower cloudbase further W around Jerilderie, then a rapid collapse south of there with dead cu's to about 20 km south of Yarrawonga. 1500 ft short of final glide at Y, but a reprieve from still-active cu's S of Wilby.

104 kph overall

25th of November 2009 LEWIS ARTHUR TANKARD 150km Great Flight

Over the past few years, I have had some very educational and enjoyable cross country flights with Graham garlick in the Duo. For whatever reason, whenever we fly together it always turns out to be anything other than a routine flight. They are always memorable. Last November during a Cross Country course that was dogged by inclement weather, we made a slow trip up and back to Yarrawonga and having returned to Benalla decided to push on to Bogong. As it turned out, the lift deteriorated in the foot hills and it became clear that Bogong was out of the question. On turning back, it was also clear that a straight glide back to Benalla wasn’t on the cards either. The general landscape was definitely tiger country which tended to focus the mind. There was a usable field and we stayed close to that. We found a hawk in light lift and stayed with it. We spend at least a half hour just going nowhere, and at one stage considered putting the wheel down and calling it a day. But as sometimes happens the lift finally began to work and slowly but surely we climbed out of the hole. This was followed by a wonderful, fast glide back to Benalla where the problem was reversed and there was so much lift that losing height was an issue. A very satisfying long circuit of the town and out over Winton and then into the circuit followed. The flight was very satisfying and showed that persistence, even with light lift, can pay off. Very memorable flight. No records broken, no great height or distance achieved, but much learned. It I always good to have a real feeling of satisfaction after a flight, and that to me is what it’s all about.

13th of November 2009 CHARLES DAY 400km Slow plod to Narrandera

Blue and stable with light wind. Country drying out nicely; plenty of high grass and crop, but ample out-landing opportunities in mown paddocks.

An uneventful run, with thermals mainly to about 6000 and an isolated 8000 ft climb at 5 pm. 84 kph overall

11th of November 2009 ROBERT MACKENZIE 97km My gold height flight (and first XC(ish!) flight) 'twas a good day. I have been solo since July. When I rocked up at the clubhouse in the morning Max suggested I take a logger with me (something I would not have thought of). Max also explained exactly how the vario works with the McReedy stuff in the Junior (that helped).

I was first off and released around 2 grand. Then started going down. Oh well, another launch for me I thought, and started to organise myselft for circuit. But then I hit some lift and up I went... and up and up! At around 6k I thought "hm, I might go over here now" (here being out towards Yarra). Then I got even more lift the other side of Mokoan and got to just over 11k! "Bugger me!", I thought. Allowing for 5km every 1000' (since I still have to be in gliding distance back to Benalla), I ventured further over toward Yarra until I saw lake Mulwala. Feeling very happy with myself, yet VERY nervous about being away from the airfield, I thought I should turn around and head back.

I flew over Thoona (which is where I live) and played over my house and took some photos. I then headed back to the airfield, played around with the Juinor doing some tight turns, practicing stalls and speeding her up a bit.

I got back to the airfield with around 5000', went back down to about 3 then climbed up to about 7 again. Played around for a bit then (having to pee) landed.

One very happy chappy.

Thanks heaps to Max for his guidance on the day.

18th of October 2009 CHARLES DAY 300km Henty with Chris Becek in club LS4

A fairly stable day, max 22 deg and light NW wind, with cu's mainly on and E of track. A slow start, but conditions much better further NE. Max 7000 ft near Henty. Things died early on return trip, being very slow south of the Murray. Last feeble lift near Wangaratta gave final glide.

11th of October 2009 CHARLES DAY 300km Schadenfreude!

Light N wind at flying heights, light E on the ground, 22 C max with widespread showers and overcast, particularly around Benalla.

A slow trip N to the Colombo Plain, N of L. Urana, just escaping a large patch of overcast at Benalla. Country still very dry N of Urana. Max cloudbase 7500 ft.

Dodged many showers on return trip, noting that the Benalla radio chatter mysteriously ceased for a long time. Almost asked for an aero tow retrieve from Yarrawonga airfield (thanks for standing by, Peter Presneill!), but climbed away in a patch of sunlight eventually.

On landing, the news that Benalla had been shut down for an hour or so due to heavy rain and thunder whilst I was away gave rise to said schadenfreude.

Very slow: 65 kph

10th of October 2009 CHARLES DAY 490km Snow conditions inspection

A cold unstable air mass remaining from persistent southerlies and snow showers earlier in the week. Light wind, cumulus, 20 deg C. max.Snow on Mt. Kosciusko clearly visible from above Benalla.

A slow run east to Mt. Bogong, where the S- facing gullies appeared skiable. Turned SW at Mt. B. because conditions further E appeared unreliable. Proceeded past Mt. Feathertop where there was snow in the gullies but no State government ministers visible, then a good high run across the donga to Mt. Buller, reaching 8500 ft at times. Still some snow boarders there playing just S of the summit.

Proceeded NW past Benalla to Tocumwal before returning to B at 6.30 pm almost on the last gasp!

A good (if somewhat delayed) start to the season! 95 kph.

30th of March 2009 CHARLES DAY 16100km Season's total (not shown on on-line contest lists)

My total km. and individual flights were modest by the standards of other Benalla pilots this season.I experienced many days with high cumulus (max 15,000 ft!). 75% of my flights were predominantly under cumulus, with only 2 low spots the whole season. No out-landings.

A season to tell your grand-children about! Many pilots extended their range further into the hill country, some traversing the dividing range south into the Omeo basin and Gippsland and to the east beyond the NSW Snowy Mountains.

9th of March 2009 L JOHN MILLOTT 500km The Rock - Glenrowan-Mt Buller

Autumn flying at its best - there is still more available. Scrapy Q with Blue patches over plains with well developed Q over hills later in the day. A satisfying, varied task.

23rd of February 2009 ROBERT NICHOLLS 286km Last Flight for 2009 at Benalla

Not a great flight, but for me the last one of a really good season at Benalla.

31st of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 500km O. and R. St. Arnaud area.

A bit groggy after anoxic trip yesterday, so oxygen remembered today, with beneficial effect.

90 min grovelling over Benalla waiting for the inversion to break (and observing the long queue of gliders on the airfield), then a fabulous run at 125 kph average under similar conditions to yesterday. Cloudbase 15,000 ft, the highest I can remember! Very noticeable sea breeze front later at about the latitude of Nagambie.

Personal total of 300,000 km passed (all without a logger)

31st of January 2009 KAH-YEOW CHONG 316km Crossed fingers

At last my 300km. Lucky for me the Junior was available for me to take for the day. I would have liked a faster carriage but I didn't care, the temp trace hasn't been like this for 10 years! 44deg could give us 16,000'. Well, it was a day for a gold height if not a 300km. The route - Henty, Yarrawonga and back. After one failed attempt to stay in the air (trying to start the baro trace low for the height claim), the second was much better.

Thermalling around the airfield allowed me to see what looked like the DuoDiscus dumping water, but on closer inspection, was actually the tow rope wrapped around both wings! Before I could get a second look, it had already pffft! for its 370km flight. The pilots didn't know it was still there until landing back at the airfield. When I spoke to them later, they thought the rope had fallen off but were glad to be oblivious than knowing and worrying. Their only clue was a poorer performance of the Duo!

I started making my way toward Henty with plenty of opportunities for golden climbs. Neer Peechalba, again the pine plantation was a good source but didn't get me to 12,000. It was also at this point that my electric vario gave erroneous readings which I figure was a weak battery. So I flew on with just the Pneumatic. Now this was truly silent flight and actually very relaxing. Lots of Cu's and 4-6kt'ers and after 5hrs flying, usually at 60kts I landed at 18:30. I hope Beryl will ok my claims.

30th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 780km Hotter and higher!

Fast O & R to Balranald under magnificent cumulus, then late, slow evening wander to Mt. Buller. 44 deg C, cloudbase 14,500 (oxygen mask forgotten)

Cu's all the way round the course (but completely blue over the Bogong High Plains and main spine of the Snowys). Max 12000. 3 -5 kts over the hills, but 5 - 7 over the plains on last leg. 117 kph overall. A scenic trip.

28th of January 2009 ROBERT NICHOLLS 1035km 2nd 1000km flight

Another 1000km flight for 2009. Off tow at 11.11am and condidions already good with 6000ft at Corowa hour later along track. Turning points Benalla, Condobolin, Yarrawonga, Deniliquin, Benalla. Maximum altitude 12,000ft. 111kph average speed.

27th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 540km The Rock, Ardlethan

38 deg C, lt. winds. Nice and relaxing under Cu's N of the Rock. 108 kph

27th of January 2009 KAH-YEOW CHONG 138km Severing the umbilical cord

Corowa O&R. This was my first XC flight after being coached by David Conway at the Nationals, which gave me the confidence I needed to really fly away from Benalla. It was a booming day and though I had the intention of flying a 300k, it took me a whole day faffing around with the Mozzie trying to get it watered up. I gave up on that as the day wore on, and finally took off without water. Who cares that I couldn't make the 300k, as long as my feet were in rudder pedals and not on the ground. Initially I climbed to about 7000' before departing. Along the way, 10kt+ thermal over the pine plantation near Peechalba. ! Also a twin engine thing passed me on the left. It was great to employ all I learned from the coaching a fornight before. I made it to Corowa in 45min, thermalled with an eagle at 9000' under cloud before final gliding home. I know it was a short flight but for a newbie XC soarer, it was HUGE!

25th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 300km Out and return to Henty

A hot, slow grind under a solid inversion. Blue, 34 deg. C, light winds.

21st of January 2009 ROBERT NICHOLLS 636km Mountain flight aborted

20th of January 2009 ROBERT NICHOLLS 892km Temora Finley Mt Buller St James

Making the best of a good day with extensive shower activity and some lightning. Maximum height 13750ft just south of Tocumwal

17th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 120km Prolonged grovel inspecting Mansfield airfields

Blue, S wind, RASP forecast of convergence zone towards Mt Buller (which did not happen)

Launched very early before Nationals pilots

16th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 300km 3 hours upwind to Bendigo, 1 hour return

A mean 30 kt SW wind, max 26 deg with subsidence from an approaching high pressure. Cu's to S of track rapidly drying out. Generally 6000 - 7000 in thermals, but 9,000 ft in a shear wave just E of Bendigo. 75 kph

14th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 700km O and R Lake Cowal, NSW

Blew the 100 km opportunity (again) by launching too early and had a re-light after 45 mins trying to stay afloat.

42 deg C, moderate NW wind. Cu's to 13,000 eventually, but only N of The Rock. 117 kph.

A fabulous day!

Lt NNW wind, 38 deg C. Sparse cu. over hills and N of The Rock. A slow, hard trip - 83 kph.

Nationals pilots did much better in the blue over the plains (but saw no scenery to speak of)

13th of January 2009 ROBERT NICHOLLS 845km Koorawatha

Turned short of Cowra at Koorawatha in excelent conditions, 10500ft cloudbase with good Cu.

12th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 760km Scenic tour - Young NSW, Mt. Kosciusko

Lt. winds, 33 deg. C. Cu only N of The Rock and in the hills to the east. Good example of sea breeze front just E of the spine of the Snowy Mtns., with cloudbase about 3000 ft lower.

Max 10,000 ft. Turned Mt K. at 4.50 PM but got home without drama.

101 kph

12th of January 2009 ROBERT NICHOLLS 851km Koorawatha Mt Kosicusko

Turned just short of Cowra at Koorawatha and then back to Benalla via Mt Kosicusko. Max Altitude 11,000ft over the mountains.

11th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 450km Bendigo, Mt. Buller

Good cumulus to 10,000 after trough moved further east. 100 kph

11th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 100km Peechelba O and R

Struggle to get away under heavy cirrus of advancing trough

9th of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 550km Just S of Wagga, Mt. Townsend

Lt. NE wind, 29 deg. C. Bands of heavy cirrus to N and W of Benalla, cu's over hills. Some dead areas. 9,000 ft. max, 85 kph

2nd of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 240km Slow wander to Mt. Strathbogie, Violet Town and Tallarook

20 kt S wind, max 23 deg C, good cumulus cover S of Benalla, but very sparse to the north.

Explored S of Benalla with Jonathon Walker in his Discus for wave over the Strathbogies, without success. Pushed into wind to just S of Seymour, following clouds over the edge of the hills. 80 kph

1st of January 2009 CHARLES DAY 300km 3 valleys, 3 waves - O & R Dartmouth Dam

Strong W wind (29 kt reported below cloudbase, much stronger higher up), 27 deg C with good cumulus affected by wave.

Played with broken wave on first leg, without success. Met up with Bob Nicholls in his 18m Ventus 2 at Dartmouth Dam. We both had difficulty in getting a decent climb, due to wave breaking up the thermals, so decided not to go further east.

Ran into wave in Mitta Mitta valley on return leg, which went to 10,000 ft, a second one in the Kiewa Valley which reached 13,000 ft and, finally, a stronger one just E of Mt. Buffalo that peaked at 5 kts and was still giving 3 kts at 14000 ft. I didn't go higher, because the oxygen mask was safely back in the hangar. ATC gave clearance to climb in this wave and to go towards Benalla, but asked me to park in the wave for about ten minutes to clear other traffic.

82 kph

31st of December 2008 CHARLES DAY 430km Henty, Murchison, Benalla triangle.

Strong SW wind, 26 deg C. Cu's over area flown, blue further N and W. Some good streets. Max 6500, min 4000, 108 kph overall.

20th of December 2008 L JOHN MILLOTT 513km Ardlethan O/R

Light SE wind, blue thermals with convection starting from 4000' and building to 7000'. Thermals were generally difficult to organise. Conditions peaked at Ardlethan, then became slow south of Rand.

15th of December 2008 Temporary Member 1105km David Jansen ASG29 Benalla to Queensland

Today there was a southerly blowing at the start of the day, which changed to a Southwesterly during the day. The thermals started about 09:30 and RASP predicted that they would be brocken and go to 7000 foot later in the day. In the event they went to 5000 foot.

David Jansen flying his ASG 29 thought he might try a little flight so he launched at 09:27 and landed in Queensland for a straight out 1105kms.

Have a look on the OLC for the trace

11th of December 2008 CHARLES DAY 430km Mt. Townsend, Harrietville.

Task area restricted to E and S of Benalla due to heavy overcast encroaching slowly fron NW.

Light winds, max 30 deg. Good cu's with some large gaps. Convergence zones with extensive cumulus E of spine of Snowy Mtns., Mt. Bogong to Mt. Hotham, Mt. Buller area and well S of Lake Eildon.

Max 9000 ft, minimum 4000, 96 kph overall

10th of December 2008 CHARLES DAY 490km Henty, Mt. Youngal (S of Khancoban), Benalla

Mod SSW wind, 27 deg C max. Very good conditions from Holbrook to Corryong area. Dead areas with cold air intrusions from the south near Mt.Youngal and N of Dartmouth Dam. Max 8500 ft, no low spots, 98 kph overall.

8th of December 2008 CHARLES DAY 140km Slow jaunt to Mt. Buller

A frustrating day, blue everywhere except for weak, scrappy cumulus towards Buller (a convergence line}and elsewhere generally south of Mt. Buffalo. Much better in the blue, where the Junior Nationals had a reasonable day. Slow, but never low.

6th of December 2008 CHARLES DAY 330km Mt. Bogong - Euroa, dodging heavy overcast

Very strong W wind with heavy and increasing cirrus to the N and W of Benalla, cu's over the hills, 27 deg C max.

Chris towed me downwind to where it was still sunny and working, Benalla being completely dead. It was then a matter of following weak cumulus over the hills and gambling on getting high enough for a final glide back under the cirrus. Max 8500 near Bogong, with some weak shear wave above the cumulus. 83 kph overall, no low spots.

3rd of December 2008 L JOHN MILLOTT 529km Balldale-Deniliquin-Bendigo-BLA

Strong W to SW wind. Good Q development over task area with short streets. Initial task was to the north, but that was abandoned after gliding into very weak blue conditions north of Corowa. Another good task, with just 3 thermals on return from Bendigo - way to go!

2nd of December 2008 L JOHN MILLOTT 502km Deniliquin-St. James-Jerilderie-BLA

Strong westerly wind with good Q development to the south, but blue at Deniliquin and north of Murray on 3rd and 4th legs. Tricky getting into Deniliquin. A good task for the day with minimal difficulty over the edge of the irrigation area.

26th of November 2008 CHARLES DAY 420km Mt. Buller, Marysville, Corowa - dodging the overcast.

Trough approaching from the NW with heavy bands of cirrus. Good run as far as Marysville with cloudbase up to 8000 over the higher country. Conditions died heading north towards Benalla under complete overcast, but a thin band of sunlight eventually saved the day. Conditions N of Benalla then became quite good late in the day.

No low spots, but only 76 kph overall.

26th of November 2008 JEREMY MILLER 170km Mt Buller O/R

A fantastic training flight with Graeme to Mt Buller. Flight uploaded to OLC if you want to see the details.

25th of November 2008 CHARLES DAY 530km RASP thermal forecast challenged

E. to Mt. Townsend (near Mt. Kosciusko), NW to Yerong Creek (just south of The Rock)via Tumbarumba area, Benalla. 96 kph overall, no low spots. Light NE wind, 27 deg C max.

Conditions weaker over hill country, mainly 3 - 4 knot climbs, with some dead stretches. Cloud touching the top of Kosciusko. Extensive snow cover on Snowy Mtns from K area as far N as Mt. Jagungal remained from southerly outbreak a few days earlier. Conditions much better on last leg back to Benalla with 5 - 6 knots and cloud base rising to 9,000 ft.

RASP forecast (which I hadn't bothered to get before launching) correctly predicted the best area as being the Benalla- Rock stretch, but was overly pessimistic in suggesting that the hills to the east would be very weak.

25th of November 2008 JEREMY MILLER 160km Fantastic Day

A fantastic day. Check out the OLC to see details on flights from Benalla for today.

3rd of November 2008 CHARLES DAY 300km Inactivity at Raywood gliding site !

A cold, mean but very unstable 30 knot SW wind after an overnight front. Heavy overcast south of Benalla latitude, but breaking up to cumulus N of this line.

A slow out and return west to Raywood gliding site (N of Bendigo), cautiously staying high and using such short cumulus streets as could be discerned under the overcast. Solid gloom at Raywood and south of there, with no sign of any gliding activity, despite there being several gliding tribes there for the week.

The return trip was more difficult because the overcast had spread further north, necessitating deviations and tip-toeing to isolated patches of sunlight where weak cumulus was still forming at about 5000 ft.

A satisfying flight, but only 67 kph overall.

2nd of November 2008 CHARLES DAY 280km Dodging the approaching trough

Heavy overcast approaching from N and W associated with a trough. 28 deg C, light Ne wind. It was just possible to fit in a short tour eas to the N end of the Kiewa Valley then W to Peechelba, passing round the S edge of the Albury airspace before it became unsoarable at Benalla. 92 kph overall

1st of November 2008 CHARLES DAY 435km Snowy Mtns.- Mt. Cobbler tour

Light NE wind, 28 deg C, with high overcast N of Murray R.from a trough, blue to W of Benalla, but good cu's to 8000 over all the hill country. Most relaxed trip E to Mt. Townsend (close to Kosciusko), then back home via Mt. Feathertop and Mt. Cobbler. Some slow patches E of Kiewa valley and particularly near Cobbler. 87 kph overall.

Several GCV gliders from Khancoban camp enjoying themselves over the Snowys and Bacchus Marsh gliders seen around Bogong.

18th of October 2008 CHARLES DAY 510km Barellan out and return

Relaxed trip north to Barellan (on rail line, east of Griffith). Fabulous cu's to 11,000 ft eventually, but some high overcast south of Murray R. Easy final glide from Oaklands. Country very green north and east of Narrandera.

110 kph overall without ever exceeding 80 knots!

5th of July 2008 JEREMY MILLER Winter Weekend

We had two very nice mild and sunny mid winter days with smooth conditions and a little thermic activity on Sunday. A total for 27 passenger, training flights and check flights were flown. An early solo pilot even found some lift!

7th of June 2008 JEREMY MILLER Wave Lift!

A beautiful, clear and sunny mild winters day with a light southerly producing the occasional spot of very light wave lift. A few air experience flights flown in gentle smooth conditions.

1st of June 2008 KAH-YEOW CHONG Sharing the passion with friends

It was a very calm sunny day with silky smooth air - perfect for flying passengers. Brown fields gave a little extra air time. I had four friends come up to experience an 'oh, what a feeling!' day of gliding. It's awesome to be able to share the passion with friends and give them an experience that just might become more than once in a lifetime. The usual response - 'it's a lot smoother and gentler than I expected'. Flying from the back seat is loads of fun and looking after a passenger adds an interesting load on top of the flying to the sponge in the skull. Good times were had by all.

10th of May 2008 JEREMY MILLER Fantastic Weather

Clear blue skies, with surprisingly good development over the ranges. Although too stable for cross country, check flights, training and introductory flights were flown with great views due to the good visibility.

14th of April 2008 CHARLES DAY 10820km 2007/2008 season's total

A fair to good season. 28 flights, 80% of which were predominately under cumulus. No very long flights.

13th of April 2008 JEREMY MILLER An even better day

Instability following the front must have still been present and produced a fantastic autumn days flying. More single seaters took advantage of the conditions. Early over development right above Benalla slowed things up for half an hour in the middle of the day, but with Cu's everywhere I heard 6500ft was reached, and four single seaters made it to Rennie and Corowa and back.

12th of April 2008 JEREMY MILLER Surprisingly Nice Day

While the forecast said 'rain periods clearing', I have learnt that it doesn't actually rain in Victoria. The weather cleared early to a very pleasant afternoon. Only three single seaters took advantage of the day, and the IS28's were kept busy training and flying air experience flights. A very nice day showing the season isn't over yet.
