Training - Novex Cross Country

When you're ready to extend your horizons, you can take part in our Novex (Novice to Expert) course. The course gives you the confidence to safely make your first tentative steps away from the airfield. Contact us for further details.

What's Included?

  • Glider hire (Duo Discus and single seaters).
  • One tow per day per aircraft.
  • All handout materials, notes, map, etc.
  • Six hours of theory.
Day 1
09:00 Attend general briefing in clubhouse.
10:00 First briefing and Lecture:
  • Discussing expectations of the students.
  • Goals for the week.
  • Local radio and CTAF procedures.
  • Familiarization with instruments and equipment.
  • Cutting the airfield umbilical cord.
12:00 Lunch.
13:00 Familiarization with gliders and equipment.
14:00 First flights. Thermaling. Area familiarization.
19:00 Flight evaluations and debrief.
Day 2
09:00 Attend general briefing in clubhouse.
10:00 Briefing. Review previous days activities.
  • How to thermal better. Scanning the sky and ground.
  • Procedures of lead and follow.
  • Flying and use of radio.
  • Weather. Where to get the info and how to use it.
11:30 Lunch.
12:00 Glider preparation.
13:00 Flying. Aiming for 50 to 100km.
19:00 Flight evaluations and debrief.
Day 3
09:00 Attend general briefing in clubhouse.
10:00 Briefing. Review previous days activities. Lecture:
  • Flight levels.
  • Speed flying.
  • MacCready.
  • Polar curves.
  • Using water ballast.
11:30 Lunch.
12:00 Glider preparation.
13:00 Flying. Short tasks with higher speed around Wangaratta and Corowa airfields.
19:00 Flight evaluations and debrief.
Day 4
09:00 Attend general briefing in clubhouse.
10:00 Briefing. Review previous days activities. Lecture:
  • Preparations for badge flights.
  • Sporting code.
11:30 Lunch.
12:00 Glider preparation.
13:00 Flying. Aiming for silver distance/duration flights.
19:00 Flight evaluations and debrief.
Day 5
09:00 Attend general briefing in clubhouse.
10:00 Briefing. Review previous days activities. Lecture:
  • Techniques for personal practice of cross-country flying and thermaling.
12:00 Lunch.
13:00 Familiarization with gliders and equipment.
14:00 Flying. More badge flights
19:00 Flight evaluations and debrief.
